Formal languages
This exam deals with:
- Languages theory, that is, what is an artificial language and its characteristics (alphabet, grammar, etc);
- Grammar types (regular, context-free, etc);
- Normal forms (e.g. Chomsky Normal Form);
- Models (Automata) to recognize valid strings for the given artificial language;
- The parsing of an artificial language, that is, the necessary techniques to properly recognize “valid sentences” of a given artificial language (e.g. LLk parsers, LR, etc);
- In more advanced courses, Turing machines and lambda calculus;

* The course was held at the IIT (Indian Institute of Technology), at
the Computer Science And Engineering Department, by Professor Kamala
Krithivasan, as part of the NPTEL (National Programme on Technology
Enhanced Learning) project.
This is the only course that really helped me in understanding what
these formal languages are, this helped me in passing the exam
properly.
My thanks go to the professor, now retired, for her great job.

Linguaggi formali
In questo esame vengono trattati:
- Teoria dei linguaggi, ovvero, cos’è un linguaggio artificiale, e le sue caratteristiche (alfabeto, grammatica, ecc);
- I tipi di grammatiche (regolari, libere da contesto, ecc);
- Forme normali (ad es. Chomsky Normal Form);
- Modelli (Automi) per il riconoscimento di stringhe valide per un dato linguaggio artificiale;
- Parsing per un linguaggio artificiale, ovvero, le tecniche necessarie per riconoscere “frasi valide” di un dato linguaggio artificiale (es. parsers LLk, LR, ecc);
- In corsi più avanzati, le macchine di Turing e il lambda calcolo;

Questo è l’unico corso che mi ha fatto capire per bene, ai tempi, cosa
fossero questi linguaggi formali, il che mi ha consentito di superare
l’esame con successo.
